of the 19 regions of Côte d'Ivoire. The region's capital is Bondoukou in the Pinango Kingdom. Covering 38,000 km2, its
population (2002 est.) is 839,000. The region is divided into three departments: Bondoukou, Bouna, and Tanda. Côte d'Ivoire
is divided into 58 departments. Bouna is a town in north east Côte d'Ivoire ' lying next to the Comoë National
Park and near the Ghanaian border. Tanda is a small village in the Mansehra district. Gyaman also spelled Jamang (1450-1895)
was a medieval African state of the Akan people, located in what is now Ghana and Côte d'Ivoire. Gyaman was founded
by the Abron, a branch of the Akan, in the late 15th century. The Abron then proceeded to conquer the Kulangos, Nafanas, Ligbis,
Hwelas, and other ethnic groups of the area. In the pre-colonial Gyaman government, a paramount chief known as the Gyamanhene
ruled the kingdom from Amanvi, but his four provincial chiefs held the kingdom's real power.
The kingdom's
economy centered on the Dyula market town of Bonduku. A paramount chief is the highest-level traditional (usually tribal)
chief or political leader in a region or country typically administered politically with a chief-based system. The territory
is located in present-day Ghana and Côte d'Ivoire. Dioula (Jula) is a language spoken in Burkina Faso and Côte
d'Ivoire. Bondoukou (Bonduku) is the capital of Cote d'Ivoires Zanzan region.

In the nineteenth century, Gyaman was subjugated by the Ashanti, though it briefly regained its independence following the
Asanti's defeat by the British. In 1888, Gyamanhene Agyeman signed a treaty of protection with France, but the French failed
to establish a post in the kingdom, leaving it vulnerable to Samori's 1895 invasion. The French later expelled Samori in 1897,
incorporating Gyaman into French West Africa. French West Africa was a Federation of eight French territories in Africa:
Mauritania, Senegal, French Sudan (now Mali), French Guinea (now Guinea), Côte d'Ivoire, Niger, Upper Volta (now Burkina
Faso) and Dahomey (now Benin). Jamang was a district of Ghana for a time, though it has now been divided into Jamang
North District and Jamang South District. The Districts of Ghana were re-organized in 1988/1989 in an attempt to decentralize
the government and to combat the rampant corruption amongst officials.
